SDP: The cheque bounced

Singapore Democrats

In 1960, Mr Lee Kuan Yew said: “I have not the slightest doubt that I could govern much more effectively in [the people's] interests.” With that promise, the PAP wrote Singaporeans a cheque: If we forsook our political rights and let the party take care of our interests, we would be well-taken care of.

We have lived the past half-a-century with no freedom of the media and assembly, critics get sued or detained when they spoke up, and we have no right to information about our reserves and savings.

Indeed, we have sacrificed much of our political rights but, at least, we still have our economic well-being to look forward to. After more than 50 years, we are ready to cash the cheque.

Only now, the PAP tells us that

  1. Without foreigners, our economy will collapse.
  2. If we want minimum wage, foreign investors will flee.
  3. Young couples have to take 30-year loans to pay off their HDB flats.
  4. When they finally pay it off, they have to sell it because they have no money left.
  5. We cannot take back our CPF retirement money because we will waste it away.
  6. We must not have too many university graduates, otherwise they will plan violent revolutions.
  7. What is the point of having a university degree if they cannot find us a job?
  8. We have to vote for it first before we can get lifts to stop on every floor.
  9. If we want to live more cheaply when we grow old – in nursing homes – we can go to Johor Bahru.
  10. If we don't pay the ministers a lot of money...they may become corrupt...or CEOs who are paid more will not listen to them...or they just won't want to serve us any more.
  11. If the poor ask for help, tell them they have to decide whether they want to eat in a hawker centre, food court or restaurant.
  12. We have to work cheaper, faster and better.
  13. And if we are better, we have to become betterer and even betterest.
  14. We don't have to worry about recessions, we just have to upturn the downturn.
  15. If it doesn't stick spurs into us, we will become stupid and lazy.
  16. Floods occur only once in 50 years.
  17. It's no fun being poor but our poor is better off than other countries' poor.
  18. It is like the little frog – deaf to criticisms.

The cheque bounced.
